Omkareshwar, situated on the Banks of River Narmada, is One of the 4th Out of 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva Ji. It is around 81 Km drive from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. It is Situated on an Island called Mandhata, with a Shape of the Island like the Hindu Om Symbol, on the Narmada River.
Omkareshwar is created by the Divine River Narmada. This River falls in the category of “Most Sacred Rivers in India” and today is a habitation to, One of the World’s Biggest Dam Projects (Sardar Sarovar Project). This Place has Two Temples, One is Omkareshwar, which denotes to “Lord of Om Sound or Lord of Omkaar” and the other one is Mamleshwar or Amareshwar, which denotes to “Lord of Immortals”.
At the Night Time, around 9:00 PM, There happens Shayan Aarti in the Main Jyotirlinga Temple, which has Spiritual Importance and it is believed that every devotee visiting Omkareshwar must witness this Shayan Aarti. The Garbh Griha of Omkareshwar Temple is decorated with an Attractive Bed and a Palna, on which it is trusted that Lord Shiva Sleeps, at Night.
A Chousar or Chopad (an primeval game played in india) is placed and it is trsuted that, In the morning, the Settings of the Game is found Changed as Lord Shiva plays Chopad, in the Night.
Omkareshwar is a Vehicle Free Town, which results the Main Bus Station is on the Outside of the City Limits.
Situated on the Western Part of the Island of Omkareshwar, The Holy Narmada contacts the Fast-Flowing Kaveri, at the Sangam Point of these two Rivers, covering with Stones of all Sizes & Shaped like Shivlings. Apart from its Holiness, the Confluence (SAngam) is the Absolute Site to get Cool Down after completing the Parikrama. Its mandatory for the Devotees to take some Dips in the Holy Waters of the Sangam to Purify themselves before getting on.
According to Hindu Mythology, It has been said that Kuber (The God of Wealth) sat here and meditated without Food & Water for 100 Years. Being Convinced with his Dedication and Worship, Lord Shiv Ji gives the appearance before Kuber and asked him, what he desires. Then, Kuber wished to be the King of the Yaksha’s and want Immortality. His wish was fulfilled by Lord Shiv Ji and He resided Happily, in the Photo-Frames in many Holy Places, Temples and Homes. After the Dip in Sangam, The Route of Parikrama gets more interesting because of its Sudden Turns, Few Climbs, Levelled Road then You Come towards Ruins of Temples & Gateways and Broken Fort Walls.
Gauri Somnath Temple comes on the Highest Peak of the Island encircled by the Number of Small Shrines and Ashrams. It has been constructed in the early 15th Century by the Parmar’s.
The Shivlinga is a 2 meters high, made up of Black Granite, situated in the Garbh Grih of the Temple. It is trusted that this Linga once showcased its Power of Revealing the Previous and Future Incarnations of a Person.
A Museum is being managed by the State’s Archaeological Dep. at the premises of Gauri Somnath Temple. The Delicate & Exquisite Statues and Portraits are positioned Indoors, and others have been fixed on Pedestals, all the around the Temple.
Mamleshwar Temple is situated at 200 meters from Gomukh Ghat. It is also known as Amaleshwar, generally considered to sanctify one of half of the Jyotirlinga, and the other half rests in Omkar Mandhata Temple, which is on the Island.
